A hand-held laser range finder provides accurate distances in a fraction of the time it takes to use a rolling tape measure. Pulses of light determine the distance between you and any object you aim at with your laser range finder. Use a built-in magnetic compass to record the angle from which you are shooting the object. These devises are especially useful in conjunction with GPS — especially when gathering GPS locations of poles in places that are not easily accessible, such as the middle of a swampy bog.
