Hydrology Projects

Columbia River Floods — Technical review and editing of reports and memoranda related to probable maximum flood, spillway design flood, and diversion flood estimates. Completed for B.C. Hydro and Power Authority, Vancouver, B.C., Canada.

Conjunctive Surface, Groundwater Utilization — Probabilistic analysis of surface supplies and use of groundwater storage to firm intermittent surface water supplies. Completed for Tacoma Water Division, Tacoma, Washington.

Flood Operations Decision Support System — Rainfall and snowmelt runoff forecasting, data acquisition, river backwater, tide forecasting, and hourly reservoir optimization for real-time flood control operation of a cascade of two reservoirs. Completed for B.C. Hydro, Campbell River, B.C., Canada.

Hourly Hydrologic Forecasting Models — Development of a real-time runoff forecasting model for operation of hydroelectric dams. Completed for Yadkin, Inc., North Carolina, and B.C. Hydro, B.C., Canada.

Hydrologic Data Acquisition — Implementation of hardware and software for acquisition and quality control of real-time hourly data via satellite downlink for operation of hydroelectric dams. Completed for several power utilities in the U.S. and Canada.

Hydrology of Small Watersheds — Review and analysis of experimental watershed data to evaluate applicability to other watersheds, recommendations for future data gathering and analysis program, and methods for use of existing data to improve design of drainage facilities. Completed for Government of Manitoba, Water Resources Branch, Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada.

Hydrology of Ungauged Watersheds (British Columbia) — Flood frequency and hydrograph behavior of 29 Columbia River tributaries determined by mathematical modeling. Completed for B.C. Hydro and Power Authority, Vancouver, B.C., Canada.

Hydrology of Ungauged Watersheds (Saskatchewan) — Estimation of flood frequency curves for spring runoff on an ungauged watershed in a swampy area of central Saskatchewan. Completed for Ducks Unlimited, Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada.

Hydrology of Ungauged Watersheds (Yukon) — Implementation of computer programs for calculation of flood frequency and hydrographs using climatological and topographical data for watersheds without streamflow data. Completed for Yukon Comptroller of Water Rights, Whitehorse, Yukon, Canada.

Instream Flows and Fish Habitat — Development of natural runoff data for a highly regulated watershed with extensive surface runoff and groundwater interaction. Completed for Seattle Water Department, Seattle, Washington. Development of natural unregulated flows and synthetic hydrology for studies of water supply operations. Completed for Tacoma Water Division, Tacoma, Washington.

Probable Maximum Flood Studies — Estimation of probable maximum flood precipitation and floods for dams. Completed for Seattle Water Department, Seattle, Washington; Yadkin, Inc., North Carolina; and B.C. Hydro, B.C., Canada.

Runoff Forecasting Model Development — Model selection for meteorological and hydrological modeling of snow accumulation and ablation, and runoff to the Cedar and Tolt River watersheds. Completed for the Seattle Water Department, Seattle, Washington.

Runoff Forecasting and Reservoir Management — Development, calibration, implementation, and real-time operation of forecasting and optimization models for the Powell and Lois Reservoir watersheds. Completed for MacMillan Bloedel Ltd., Powell River, B.C., Canada.

Seasonal Water Yield — Estimation of minimum summer water yield from gauged and ungauged watersheds along the 1,400-mile route of a proposed natural gas pipeline. Completed for Foothills Pipelines South Yukon Limited, Calgary, Alberta, Canada.

Short-Term Forecasting for Reservoir Releases — Analysis of upstream reservoir releases on downstream construction, considering economic effects on power generation, downstream unregulated runoff during rain events, and open-channel transient routing between the reservoir and the construction site. Completed for B.C. Hydro and Power Authority, Vancouver, B.C., Canada.

Skeena River Hydrology — Generation of historical streamflow for the Skeena River and its tributaries, flood frequency curve and PMF for power project feasibility studies. Complete for B.C. Hydro and Power Authority, Vancouver, B.C., Canada.

Small Ungauged Watersheds — Development, implementation, and distribution of computer programs for data management and rainfall-runoff modeling for small ungauged watersheds in B.C. Completed for the Canadian Department of Energy, Mines, and Resources.

Yukon River Forecasting — Developed methods for seasonal runoff forecasting and optimization of reservoir releases for power and recreation. River and lake rating curves were estimated from office studies and computer modeling. Forecasting runoff from snowmelt was developed and integrated with probabilistic analysis of rainfall and glacier melt. Completed for Yukon Comptroller of Water Rights, Yukon, Canada.
