Columbia River Optimization — Reservoir operations mathematical modeling to optimize monthly releases for a given forecasted runoff, for Canadian storage. Completed for B.C. Hydro and Power Authority, Vancouver, B.C., Canada.
Hourly Scheduling, Dispatching, and Reservoir Reregulation — Implementation of an optimization computer program for a cascade of four hydroelectric dams to minimize the cost of purchased supplementary power for an aluminum smelter, considering mismatched hydraulic capacities, reservoir level constraints, turbine efficiency curves, and on-peak demand charges. The model dispatches each of 13 units hourly on a seven-day reservoir cycle. Completed for Yadkin, Inc., North Carolina.
Hydroelectric Power Plant Upgrade — Planning and supervision of field measurements of turbine efficiency and physical condition, and analysis of economic considerations for rehabilitation and replacement of facilities at two powerhouses. Completed for MacMillan Bloedel Ltd., Powell River, B.C., Canada.
Liard Project Alternatives — Analysis of alternative cascades of four major dams to determine the effect of reservoir level constraints on energy production. Completed for B.C. Hydro and Power Authority, Vancouver, B.C., Canada.
Mersey River System Analysis — Establish historical natural runoff to a system of six hydroelectric stations and develop a mathematical optimization model for real-time operation of the system. Completed for Nova Scotia Power Corporation, Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada.
Micro-Hydro Assessment — Energy studies of alternative arrangements for a small hydroelectric facility at a flood control, water supply, and low flow augmentation reservoir. Completed for Tacoma Light Division, Tacoma, Washington.
Optimal Water Management and Turbine Scheduling — Development and implementation of a computer program for maximizing the revenue from hourly operations of reservoirs and hydroelectric power plants. Completed for Puget Sound Energy, Bellevue, Washington; the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation, Denver, Colorado; and Yadkin, Inc., North Carolina.
Project Optimization — Review and modify computer programs used to optimize hydroelectric site arrangements. Completed for B.C. Hydro and Power Authority, Vancouver, B.C., Canada.
Pulsed Operations to Maximize Peaking Capacity — Development of an unsteady flow optimization procedure to maximize peak output per unit of water released while maintaining minimum navigation depths downstream. Completed for Duke Power Company, Charlotte, North Carolina.
Small Hydro Developments — Energy studies, hydrology, and cost estimates to establish the most economical mix of hydro, purchased energy from B.C. Hydro, and diesel generation from a system of three to five small hydro plants and five lakes, for expansion of an existing mine. Completed for Westmin Resources, Vancouver, B.C., Canada.
Small Scale Hydroelectric Development — Hydrology of ungauged watersheds, cost analysis, and installed capacity optimization for private hydroelectric development companies in British Columbia, Ontario, Washington, and California. Completed for R.W. Beck and Bonneville-Pacific Inc., Seattle, Washington.
